Special Guest in-studio on California Sportsmen Radio Show was Jack Findleton, known to many in the Sacramento area as “Captain Jack” of “Sacramento Sportfishing Guides” which he captained for over 25 years until retirement. He brought his grandson Drew Matzen along.

Captain Jack’s reputation was built on catching the famed California Delta Striped Bass. His clients got more than expected and Jack’s boat produced results. He is an excellent trainer and many anglers learned and went on to do their own thing after a trip or two with Jack. Sturgeon season was another activity his clients enjoyed. His trips always included talking about the techniques and tackle – the whys, hows and wheres of what he was doing. He developed and fine-tuned trolling techniques that continue to be very effective in catching fish. He also ventured beyond the Delta on occasion and was known to hit the local rivers to catch Salmon and Steelhead.

Jack also spent many summers in Alaska where he guided clients wanting to catch King and Coho Salmon and Halibut. He was a busy instructor there too as many of his local clients booked Jack to experience their “bucket list” trips!

Many folks know of Jack, the voice of the Lowrance Training Centers with International Sportsmens Expos. He covered all their markets for years and taught many, many anglers how to use the constantly changing electronic locators during those years when the new technology was making an impact on the fishing industry. He has held numerous seminars, has written articles and as a matter of fact, a book in 1985, “The Great Whale Rescue”, which covered the historic Humphrey the Whale rescue in the Sacramento area, that he spearheaded.

There’s a lot to know about Jack – founder of the Sacramento Chapter of California Striped Bass Association and his love of the sport of fishing and his advocacy of conservation and preservation for our future generations. He faded into the background of most activities for several years as he fought cancer and it’s great to see him on his feet again with that very positive and happy outlook. He’s a little thinner and his famous beard is shorter and grey-er but the old Jack is as entertaining, funny and informative as he’s always been. It was great having him come by the studio, especially with that attitude and that grandson…who really enjoyed the visit. So we’ll get them to stop by again!
